Insurance premiums are not expected to rise steeply after the introduction of a harmonization law on compulsory third party liability motor insurance, insurance companies said yesterday.
Deputies had warned earlier this week that insurance costs were expected to be subject to a drastic increase based on an EU Directive that must be implemented by June 11.
At the moment, insurance companies are expected to cover a minimum of £60,000 for material damages in the event of an accident. Based on the directive, this amount will increase to £600,000 (1 million euros).

Traffic police around the island are looking into a total of five accidents that left a total of six people injured on Thursday night.
Two people were injured in an accident in Polis Chrysochous. According to traffic police, the car, which was being driven by a 28-year-old man on Constantinopoleos Street, careered out of control, hit a tree and then crashed into a ditch on the side of the road. The driver and his 25-year-old passenger were rushed to a private clinic in the town before being transferred to Paphos General Hospital. Neither man was wearing a seatbelt. In Limassol, a 27-year-old man was arrested after crashing into a car being driven by a 31-year-old on Rafael Street. Traffic police conducted a breathalyser test on the driver, which showed he had 98mg of alcohol in his blood. The legal alcohol limit in Cyprus is 22mg.
